CAT 2025 Study Plan for Beginners: 400 Days to the D-Day

CAT. Just the word is enough to make any aspirant break into a cold sweat. So much material, competitive effort, and immense pressure to perform at best can leave you overwhelmed. But relax! There is a road map to success, a clear, actionable plan that guides you through these 400 days leading up to CAT 2025.

This is a general study plan and should be modified to your individual strengths, and weaknesses.

Phase 1: Foundation Building (2-3 Months)

  • Focus: Familiarize yourself with the fundamentals of each section: Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Aptitude, Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning.
  • Activities:
    • Review of Basics: Go through NCERT books for Maths, English, and Reasoning for Class 10th and 12th.
    • Identify Strengths & Weaknesses: Diagnostic tests enable you to know your present level of proficiency so that one can know which areas need most concentration.
    • Conceptual Clarity: Focus on building a strong foundation in fundamental concepts.
    • Practice Basic Questions: Practice many basic level questions from standard study material.
    • Build Vocabulary: Start building a strong vocabulary through regular reading, vocabulary building exercises and making flashcards.
    • Reading Habit: Develop a regular reading habit focusing on diverse genres and styles from credible sources such as Aeon Essays, The New York Times and The Hindu Editorials

Phase 2: Advanced Learning (3-4 Months)

  • Focus: Improving your understanding of the concepts and building advanced problem-solving skills.
  • Activities:
    • Advanced Study Material: Use CAT-specific study material-books, online courses, mock tests-to delve into complex concepts from various sources like Arun Sharma, Cracku or iQuanta.
    • Reliable Institutes for mocks: Top institutes like IMS, CL (Career Launcher) and TIME (Triumphant Institute of Management Education) provide high-quality mock tests. They provide an in-depth analysis, insights, and personalized feedback which helps you understand where you stand in an All India competition.
    • Mock Test Analysis: Start taking mock tests regularly and make sure to analyze your performance. Identify areas where you struggle and focus your efforts on improving in those.
    • Time Management: Improve your time management skills by solving questions within different time brackets.
    • Focus on Accuracy: Always prioritize accuracy over speed since it may cost you some negative marks. Try not to make careless mistakes. 
    • Develop Effective Strategies: Learn and implement different problem-solving strategies for each section based on your comfort zone.
    • Reading Comprehension: Practice reading comprehension passages from diverse sources across various genres and analyze different question types.

Phase 3: Intensive Practice & Revision (2 Months)

  • Focus: Honing your skills, improving speed, and refining your strategy.
  • Activities:
    • Full-length Mock Tests: Take at least 1-2 full-length mock tests a week under exam similar conditions. Analyze your performance and identify areas of improvement.
    • Topic-wise Practice: Focus on the weak topics as identified in the analysis based on the mock tests.
    • Regular Revision: Revise all concepts previously read to reinforce your understanding since you may come across many models.
    • Restructure Test-taking Strategy: You must work upon your strategy concerning test taking, time management, and selection of questions, and avoiding mistakes.
    • Mental Preparation: Develop a positive mindset and maintain your peace during the final weeks of preparation, although it may be very overwhelming.

Phase 4: Final Preparation (1 Month)

  • Focus: Final revision, boosting confidence, and staying calm.
  • Activities:
    • Mock Tests: Similar to the final test, practice tests should be taken at least 2-3 in a week within the same set time so that you get extensively accustomed to them.
    • Review Mock Tests: Evaluate your performance in the recent mock tests by identifying the areas that were scored highly in and those that were not in order to work on such levels and improve.
    • Light Revision: Focus on quick revision of key formulas, concepts, and strategies.
    • Relax and Rejuvenate: Take quality time to rest well, relax, and get proper sleep to maintain your mental well-being and calm those anxiety nerves.
    • Positive Visualization: Visualize yourself performing well on the exam and stay confident in your abilities.

General Tips:

  • Maintain Consistency: Be consistent, make a study schedule and stick to it.
  • Don't Hesitate to Ask Help: Don't hesitate to ask teachers, mentors, or search the web for help when you need it.
  • Motivate Yourself: Fix the target, celebrate each achievement, and keep yourself motivated throughout the preparation process.
  • Stay Healthy: Make sure to get adequate sleep, exercise, and a balanced diet to maintain your physical and mental health.
